Our Teaching Philosophy

At Higher Revelation, we believe music and the arts develop the whole individual. The arts foster empathy and an awareness of others, which in turn leads to the building of community. Music lessons at Higher Revelation implement these three major principles:

1) Experiencing Music

We utilize music as a means of pursuing truth. Students will learn music theory, music history, and biographies of famous composers to capture new insights into human nature. Our aim is to discover the intent of composers new and old, discern their worldview, and observe how their work has influenced culture.

2) Personal Achievement

Few pursuits are as rewarding as practicing and performing musical masterworks. Our mission is to coach students toward achieving their goals, accomplishing pieces they enjoy and sharing the fruit of their labor with others. This builds a robust confidence in students that will equip them to thrive in the many facets of their life.

3) Self-Discovery

We strive to expose students to a great variety of music to push them out of their comfort zone, helping them uncover new music that captivates them. Additionally, we guide students in developing the ability to read, analyze, write, and perform music independently as they discover their personal interests. In this way, students can express themselves more effectively, impacting the world around them.

Structure of Music Lessons

To give them the fullest music experience, we present students with a holistic program that will challenge and excite them. After an initial evaluation to see where students are in their music journey, a typical lesson will look like this:

  • Warm-ups, scales, and other technical exercises to promote effective technique.

  • Sight reading, which develops music reading abilities.

  • Music theory and history, which give students a well-rounded understanding of musical pieces through various eras.

  • Pieces both for study and fun – students will play assigned exercises and pieces of their own choosing based on the student’s personal interests.

Along with these foundations, students will also:

  • Watch and critique other musical performances, thereby enhancing their own skills.

  • Encounter basic principles of composing, acting, and story writing that will enrich their study of music.

  • Learn effective practice habits that will improve the quality and enjoyment of their pieces.
  • (For Voice students) Experience the opportunity to sing in Italian, German, French, and Latin, expanding appreciation of world cultures.
